How Would You Wear This? Takeaways from our Spring Styling Event

A T-shirt can be worn countless ways; it’s all about how you style it. This was a central theme around our styling event, hosted at the KULE Rockefeller Center store last week (don’t worry if you missed it, there’ll be more!). With a Spring collection made for mixing and matching, we’re here to spill some top takeaways from the event with tips on how to style pieces to make them distinctly fit for you.

The event was hosted by our very own Elizabeth Tamkin, who is a former market editor and often does personal styling appointments on the weekends. We invited a very kule crowd to come by and shop and learn a few styling tips along the way. Here are a few of her styling points from the event:

Layering is the Hero of Spring

Layering isn’t just for cold weather. The new KULE Spring styles offer you both base items and styling pieces. Think: a pair of terry shorts with a striped tee + a terry sweatshirt over your shoulders. Or! A terry romper with a spaghetti tank under it for a touch of stripes + a cardigan over your shoulders.

Sets will Save the Day

A set is the absolute easiest way to look put together but still look really cool. A set is the definition of a blank canvas which you can add as little to (minimalism!) or as much to (maximalism!) as you’d like. For example, style a striped spaghetti tank (my personal favorite new style) with striped shorts + a button down shirt left open + a cardigan on top.

Add a Touch of Color or Pattern to Make an Outfit More Exciting (and more Your Own!)

I found that even the most color-avoidant customers still gravitated towards colorful pieces. Spring dressing can still include navy, black, white, or heather grey but adding a bit of pattern or color is always a good idea. It’s why we have so many accessories this season!

Spring Outfit Tip: How to Win at “Sets” 🎾

Whether on or off the courts, a set is the best way to look like you know what you’re doing when getting dressed. It’s a full outfit, set up for you! With so many new sets for Spring — from 100% cotton, to terry, to our newest style: waffle — we have a set for pretty much every day of the week and some tricks up our sleeve as to how to style them.

Spring is very much about layering, and you need the perfect base for when it reaches peak-temperatures, so you still look cool even with your blazer and scarf now removed. KULE has been doing sets for years with the striped Modern or Tank + Short set, and Spring 2021’s best-selling terry cloth sets (back again for Spring 2022 in new colors!). This season, Nikki has designed even more options, so you can basically live in sets all Spring season, on into Summer.

A favorite this season is this navy rugby, a best-selling style for KULE paired with matching shorts, both 100% cotton. The shorts have pockets to hold anything from tennis balls to Tootsie Rolls, and the rugby is easy to wear tucked in or out, layered with a blazer or trench or windbreaker day-to-night.

On the courts or at cocktails, a set is always a good idea.

Additionally, these sets are designed to mix and match so, you can wear the aforementioned navy shorts with a navy tee or tank instead of the Rugby, and you can pair the terry shorts (which come in navy or cream) with a terry polo or bra top or Franny sweatshirt. Or layer them all together!. It’s basically a Sets buffet.

The newest material, waffle 🧇! Featuring the Rosewell half-zip with drop shoulder sleeves and the Megan short (also with pockets), that has the perfect mid-rise for half-tucking or wearing left out.

Styling these sets is the most fun. Here, I (hi! It’s Elizabeth) wore my Rosewell waffle half-zip and Megan shorts set, with an oversized Hutton button down layered under for an extra bit of warmth on an early Spring day. I took note of how Nikki styled the set (above), and added a pair of Mary Jane shoes for a bit of femininity.

You could, of course, wear the set solo instead, and add layers on top! I love a blazer layered over, as seen below, worn with sneakers for a casual touch.

The collection’s overarching theme of Tennis really translates in these sets. Tennis clothing is comfortable and wearable, but put together, and that’s exactly what a set does for Spring dressing. It’s a full outfit that you can wear as is, or add your own touches and have fun styling with. Have we made our case for Spring sets 😉?

A Colorful Cure for the Winter Blues

In the middle of winter, on the coldest, shortest days, many of us have the tendency to go for the simplest, darkest items in our closets. We get it, but it’s actually dressing in color that will lift your mood and energize you for brighter days ahead. You dress your mood, so why not influence your mood with how you dress? Read on for some dressing inspiration — including KULE’s January drop — to put a rare February smile on your face 🌈🙂.

Styling to Boost Your Mood

Combat your February slump by dressing happy with something like a rainbow sweater or multicolor tee. Think of the colorful item as an automatic caffeine boost, which we think is best paired with something neutral. Try wearing your fresh, vibrant sweater with a pair of neutral trousers, or your joyful tee with dark denim. Your multicolor piece is suddenly as versatile as a neutral one. We tend to think that the most classic look is jeans and a tee, so do that, but with some color.

One of my personal favorite colorful winter styling hacks is wearing your multicolored tee or sweater with neutral pants/jacket, and then coordinating color with accessories (think: orange frames if your tee has orange in it, or a green hat if it has green in it, etc.). Having fun with the colors really unifies an outfit. It’s a winter styling formula that’s easy to switch up with simple accessory swaps.

Of course, if rainbow isn’t your thing, picking a color you love, to work into your wardrobe, is still a winter mood-boost (such as this luxurious berry-striped cashmere sweater 😍).

How to Shop for Some Winter Cheer

Choosing colorful pieces that still feel elevated, means choosing pieces that are statement but still chic, vibrant but not noisy, and most importantly, bring you joy, even on the coldest, most dreary winter days. Work some feel-good items into your wardrobe; from statement pieces (our cozy Holly sweater and best-selling rainbow tee, shown above), to accessories with which to finish off an outfit (scarves, jewelry, hats, a belt), from both KULE and other cheerful brands.

It’s Officially the Puffer Coat Phase of Winter

Winter is divided into different phases, each marked by the appropriate outerwear. Every year in early-to-mid January, without fail, we enter the puffer coat phase of the season. This means that absolutely no other coat will be able to do the trick of keeping you warm other than a puffy cloud of insulation.

Puffers are generally harder to style than your quilted shell or your wool cocoon (Of course! They’re a layer of puff!) But there is a formula to styling them to make them fun and intentional, not just necessary. First, you want to look for a puffer that has some pizzazz to it, be that with a cool feature (such as a tie hood!), or some fashion element or print (uh, stripes!?). And then it’s all about the styling. Read on for some insight into how to style winter’s warmest staple.

Refine the Puffer

Because a puffer is, at its core, a pretty casual style of outerwear, I like to refine the puffer with things like tailored trousers and classic accessories. Nikki recently wore a puffer with such an outfit — she wore corduroys and loafers — which looked quite Milanese to me (perfect timing with Pitti Uomo’s recent occurrence if I do say so myself 😉).

By styling the puffer with timeless items, you subdue the sportiness of the coat. The Trevor puffer, my personal favorite of the KULE puffers, features a hood you can tie in a bow under your chin. In a deep navy with subtle poppy accents, this style looks elegant for a puffer, perfect for looking intentional and chic in your winter wear.

Make the Puffer the Statement

If you have a fashion puffer, i.e. one with print, pattern, or some special design element, embrace it! Make the puffer the statement. Fashion puffers are often a bit playful, so have fun! I like streamlining the silhouette and pairing the wideness of the puffer on top with slim cigarette pants or a mini skirt/tights. I’d go for a kitten heel or fun flat if there’s no snow on the ground, or a sleek ankle boot to minimize the bulk.

Lean into the Après-Ski

You can also, of course, go all in to the wintry vibe and dress in an après-ski look. This is actually my personal favorite way of styling a puffer because go big or go home! It’s thematic dressing! Think: the warmest classic puffer around, worn over a chunky sweater, paired with stirrups, a mandatory balaclava, and big sunglasses. Très chic ⛷️.

A Winter Icon: The History of the KULE Moritz Balaclava

The balaclava is really the only hat to wear during the intense winter chill; it helps shield your face against freezing wind. KULE was one of the first to reintroduce the balaclava to the fashion masses when Nikki designed her first KULE Moritz balaclava for the Fall 2017 collection, inspired by the famous photograph of Jackie O. by Harry Benson (1968)

We have that iconic original classic cream version, of course, but since then we’ve added lots of colors and patterns, including our latest ones for January, so you can match your mood or winterwear.

The amount of KULE balaclava fans, as you can see all over Instagram, is incredible. The people love this hat! And there is so much inspiration on how to style: with statement sunglasses à la Linn Ecklund, with après ski gear like Blanca Miró Scrimieri and Natasha Goldenberg, on the slopes like Kelly Rutherford, with a voluminous collar like Leandra Medine Cohen, or with a statement eye like Marianne Theodorsen. The possibilities are endless and up to your own winter styling creativity.

A Guide to KULE Tees

Nikki has been a collector of stripes her whole life, from the very first one her parents brought home for her from Portofino. Over time she amassed countless shirts, but there was always something just a bit off. She would love the fabric but not the fit, the neck but not the sleeve. So, she set out to make the perfect stripe shirt. She quickly learned you can’t come up with just one. Like denim, depending on your mood, you need a couple of different options. She has spent years perfecting her tees and adding new ones, from crewnecks and turtlenecks, rugbies, and tanks, all in carefully considered cotton weights and shapes. With ten different women’s tee shapes, in stripes, solids and original graphics, we want you to find the right one for you. So let’s dive in and find the perfect match.

The Modern and Modern Long

The Modern and Modern Long are Nikki’s go-to for everyday easy jeans + tee wearing, sort of like a second skin. It is the most traditional KULE tee style. Nikki says the Modern Long is her favorite winter tee because it is easy to layer under sweaters, but still thick enough to wear alone.

The Boyfriend

The Boyfriend is Nikki’s favorite boxy, thicker-weight style. She usually sizes up to make it even more oversized, and wears it untucked. I like to think of the Boyfriend as a 75% t-shirt, 25% sweatshirt because it’s thick enough to keep you cozy, but thin enough that you can still do a front or billowy tuck.

The Classic

We think of the Classic as the updated French mariniére tee. While it’s the same midwieght as the Boyfriend, it features a more fitted, tailored fit and a 3/4 sleeve. The Classic is perfect wearing under a blazer with a few bracelets or your everyday watch because the cropped sleeves let your wrists stand on display. If you want to go for the perfect tee with a French Riviera vibe, this one’s it.

The Baja and Malibu

Nikki created the Baja and Malibu because she wanted the perfect tee to wear in warmer months. Both of these tee styles are made from featherweight, cloud-like cotton that is so soft, you’ll be tempted to wear them to sleep in. The Baja is short sleeved and slightly cropped while the Malibu is 3/4 sleeved with a full-length body. If you live in a warmer climate, or are traveling somewhere warm for the holidays (I’m so jealous) these are the perfect easy tees. They also happen to pack down really, really small.

The Turtleneck and Tissue Turtleneck

We have two types of turtlenecks: one is lightweight and the other is featherweight cotton. The lightweight cotton is the same weight as our Modern tees and is great to wear both alone or layered. The tissue turtleneck is the perfect super-soft extra layer between you and a crewneck, v-neck or cardigan sweater, but is most special because it truly can be worn most of the year because it’s so lightweight. The Tissue Turtlenecks all feature mid-body stripes while the regular Turtlenecks come in both full-body stripes and solids.

The Rugby

The rugby has stolen the hearts of so many customers who either like to wear them true to size, or they size up, or even go for men’s for an oversized look. Case in point: Reese Blutstein (@double3xposure) here, wearing her Men’s XL as a dress. In the same weight as the Modern, the Rugby is meant to be a truly everyday tee, worn alone. with a blazer, or under a sweater with the collar peaking out. You can expect a new colorway every season that follows the palette of the collection. Seasonally, there’s also the very stylish and iconically KULE patch rugby, sewn together from deadstock fabrics. Sporty and chic.

Our lightweight, sleeveless super soft cotton tank comes in both solids and stripes so you can wear it all summer or under sweaters in the colder months. It has a slightly boxy fit so it doesn’t cling to your body. If you are going on vacation. you can pair it with the shorts (also 100% cotton) for a really easy warm weather set.
