O BOY it’s Sale Time! Here’s a Helpful Guide to Shopping the Sale of the Year

It’s the excitement of the holidays all over again! The KULE Sale – which only happens once a year – is on now, and there are bountiful amounts of tees, sweaters, outerwear, socks, bags…all of the pieces you know and love KULE for. But sales can be difficult to shop, even with a breakdown of category, size, and discount. As a former market editor, and very passionate shopper, I am here to help you get started with some of my picks from the sale–and tips on the many ways to style them! – Elizabeth Tamkin, KULE Content + Partnerships Manager

Don’t Sleep on the Classics

This is a generally good tip when shopping any sale: note classic pieces! For KULE, that means stripes and solid styles that will never expire and can be styled a plethora of ways. The KULE sale has a ton of classic pieces in styles that are core to the brand. Because KULE is known for stripes, I would definitely go for a striped style, and the 100% cashmere Addie sweater is one of my favorites of the loot. It’s a versatile cream/navy stripe with a slightly oversized, relaxed, and comfy fit. More classics: timeless jackets (like this quilted one that has subtle signature KULE stripe detailing), striped tees, solid cotton and cashmere knits, everyday shirting, and of course smiles.

Pieces to Keep you Happy at Home

I am very determined to be purposeful when I’m getting dressed to stay in. Whether or not you’re working from home, January and February are the months to stay in cozy on the couch as much as possible. KULE’s sale has pieces that are great for that, while still feeling good and thoughtful in your outfit, in velour, cashmere, and some fun prints too (the camo sets are my favorite). There are also ways to take these loungewear pieces out, in case you wind up getting a spurt of energy. Why not pair a pair of luxurious sweatpants or joggers with a blazer? Or a sweatshirt with a tulle skirt? My personal favorite pieces for doing just that are the Velour because it is so fun to dress up or down. Some tips in the video below 😉.

For Your Future Self ☀️

As a sale shopper, I have two mindsets: immediate vs. future gratification. The official first day of Spring is 2 months away (I cannot even write out in words the joy that sentence brings me), and one way to really hype yourself up for the warmer weather is get shopping! Sale is a great time to do that. When shopping sale for the next season, you want to buy things you feel like you will really love in a couple months (or just dance around in them at home now). There are really classic warm weather pieces in the sale: dip-dyes, cabana shirts, striped shorts, tees, and dresses. You want items you can mix and match on into summer because by then, you’ll be coordinating with your beachwear.

It’s Officially the Puffer Coat Phase of Winter

Winter is divided into different phases, each marked by the appropriate outerwear. Every year in early-to-mid January, without fail, we enter the puffer coat phase of the season. This means that absolutely no other coat will be able to do the trick of keeping you warm other than a puffy cloud of insulation.

Puffers are generally harder to style than your quilted shell or your wool cocoon (Of course! They’re a layer of puff!) But there is a formula to styling them to make them fun and intentional, not just necessary. First, you want to look for a puffer that has some pizzazz to it, be that with a cool feature (such as a tie hood!), or some fashion element or print (uh, stripes!?). And then it’s all about the styling. Read on for some insight into how to style winter’s warmest staple.

Refine the Puffer

Because a puffer is, at its core, a pretty casual style of outerwear, I like to refine the puffer with things like tailored trousers and classic accessories. Nikki recently wore a puffer with such an outfit — she wore corduroys and loafers — which looked quite Milanese to me (perfect timing with Pitti Uomo’s recent occurrence if I do say so myself 😉).

By styling the puffer with timeless items, you subdue the sportiness of the coat. The Trevor puffer, my personal favorite of the KULE puffers, features a hood you can tie in a bow under your chin. In a deep navy with subtle poppy accents, this style looks elegant for a puffer, perfect for looking intentional and chic in your winter wear.

Make the Puffer the Statement

If you have a fashion puffer, i.e. one with print, pattern, or some special design element, embrace it! Make the puffer the statement. Fashion puffers are often a bit playful, so have fun! I like streamlining the silhouette and pairing the wideness of the puffer on top with slim cigarette pants or a mini skirt/tights. I’d go for a kitten heel or fun flat if there’s no snow on the ground, or a sleek ankle boot to minimize the bulk.

Lean into the Après-Ski

You can also, of course, go all in to the wintry vibe and dress in an après-ski look. This is actually my personal favorite way of styling a puffer because go big or go home! It’s thematic dressing! Think: the warmest classic puffer around, worn over a chunky sweater, paired with stirrups, a mandatory balaclava, and big sunglasses. Très chic ⛷️.

A Winter Icon: The History of the KULE Moritz Balaclava

The balaclava is really the only hat to wear during the intense winter chill; it helps shield your face against freezing wind. KULE was one of the first to reintroduce the balaclava to the fashion masses when Nikki designed her first KULE Moritz balaclava for the Fall 2017 collection, inspired by the famous photograph of Jackie O. by Harry Benson (1968)

We have that iconic original classic cream version, of course, but since then we’ve added lots of colors and patterns, including our latest ones for January, so you can match your mood or winterwear.

…or a go for a cheery rainbow to combat the winter slump.

The KULE Moritz is designed to be worn fully over your face, or cupped under your chin. Available for adults, and now also for kids and dogs, because the little ones need that protection, too!

The amount of KULE balaclava fans, as you can see all over Instagram, is incredible. The people love this hat! And there is so much inspiration on how to style: with statement sunglasses à la Linn Ecklund, with après ski gear like Blanca Miró Scrimieri and Natasha Goldenberg, on the slopes like Kelly Rutherford, with a voluminous collar like Leandra Medine Cohen, or with a statement eye like Marianne Theodorsen. The possibilities are endless and up to your own winter styling creativity.

Behold! The Unofficial Official Coziest Week of the Year

It’s not the strangest thing to lose track of what day of the week it is anymore, but this week we really embrace it. Between Christmas and New Year’s Day is a period when time stops…but simultaneously speeds forward. The only thing that makes sense to wear right now is pajamas, the only shoes are slippers, and the only time to take a shower is right in the middle of the day. We want this official coziest week of the year to hold true to its name, so let’s get our pajamas and a cup of hot chocolate. If you have a fireplace, I highly suggest you get that going, too.

The formula is simple. You start with getting into pajamas ASAP. KULE happens to make a really good pair in both long and short. Don’t take our word or it though. Amanda Dobbins from the Ringer Dish Podcast has a glowing review of this chic, incredibly soft, cozy set. You should be wearing pajamas all day.

And with your fabulous pajamas as the base of your ensemble, you need some ultra cozy accessories. Think: cushy and festive socks, super soft shearling slippers, and a blanket to wrap it all up in.

You will also need to keep absolutely fabulous, but not fussy. This week is all about looking great with ease and effortlessness. A must is an original Carrie Bradshaw long pearl strand to wear with pajamas. It gives you the comfort off knowing that you could get up mid-movie or book to grab some extra popcorn from the corner store, and look glamorous doing so. Of course, you will also need a perfect and cool mug, one that fits a heaping serving of hot chocolate loaded up with marshmallows. For some guilt-free indulgence — a seemingly impossible combo, but one I recently found — dark cocoa covered almonds that come in serving size pouches (though I dare you to just have one). And while lounging in pearls, sipping hot chocolate, and snacking on chocolate covered almonds, you will need a face mask! A paste or sheet mask — whichever you prefer — that’s super restorative because this week is all about relaxing and renewing before the New Year, of course.

A Guide to Last Minute Gifts (That Don’t Look Like Last Minute Gifts)

With less than a week until the holidays, some of us have found ourselves scrambling. You try to prep gifting ahead, get overwhelmed, and then feel like you’re falling through holiday quicksand. But don’t fret! Stores are back open for last minute shoppers, plus there are plenty of gifts that are just an email away with gift cards or subscriptions. Just because you were busy, overwhelmed, or simply not ready for the blur that is December, doesn’t mean you can’t still get the kulest gifts for the ones you love 🎁.

Let’s start with the easiest and — in my experience as a recipient — favorite gifts to give: digital gifts! Gift cards are actually my favorite because I can use them when I actually really, really want something. New collections are launching and gift cards will come in very handy when they do! KULE gift cards are here for the purchasing, so just name your price. I also recommend going for an Air Mail subscription. It’s the gift that keeps on giving weekly, straight to your inbox. It’s $79.99 for an annual subscription which means there will be tons of shopping treats and of course, articles to read with morning coffee for the duration of 2022. Other subscriptions I highly recommend: a Grounded Plants plant of the month subscription which delivers every month for 3 months (someone get this for me). For coffee lovers, a Blue Bottle subscription which means a variety of different coffees to try weekly! Fool-proof for New York gift-recipients would be a membership to Chill House services which means a monthly 50-Minute Massage or facial. Others I’ve recommended before and still stand by: a customized flower subscription (moms will love) or a Criterion Channel membership for endless classic movies at $99.99 a year.

Now time for some physical gifts. If you’re in New York, I would be remiss to not mention the KULE Rockefeller Center store where we will help you find last minute gifts for men, women, kids, and even dogs. We also have embroidered cocktail napkins — sold exclusively in store — which are a great addition to your holiday tablescape. In classic KULE sayings, food emojis, festive O JOY and OY VEY embroidery, they’re playful and pretty. If you can’t make it to the store, we are offering complimentary same-day delivery to most Manhattan zip codes on orders over $100.

Also uptown, The MoMA design store is always a place I go in person for last minute, really original gifts. When you click on an item online, it also will tell you what store it’s available at. I love their home assortment and am personally eyeing the Cocca Moka Espresso Pot, available at The Museum Store on 53rd Street. (By the way, MoMA also has a Gift card if you are not near a store). If you’re headed downtown, Sabah Studio NYC will have its Bleecker Street doors open for you to shop the best men’s and women’s slippers. I strongly recommend the Shearling Babas for cozy feet all winter. Not too far away in SoHo is Winter on Wooster, a curated collection of fun online brands from around the world with a focus on female and minority-founded small businesses, all for you to physically shop last minute gifts until the 24th! Some highlights: Julietta for handmade hair accessories and jewelry, BONBONWHIMS for funky, youthful, colorful rings, and Predominantly Black for natural body care and candles for the most relaxing holiday season.

If you can’t physically make it shopping, one of my absolute favorite candles is available for next day shipping! Homesick candles are personalized candles: you can get your loved one their hometown scent, perfect for the holidays. And then we have Net-a-Porter and The Outnet which each offer $25 same-day delivery for customers based in New York City and adjacent locations (see details here). You can receive your gifts, wrapped in a bow, in no time!

Welcome to The Cashmere Shop: the Coziest Place for the Holidays

Similar to how Nikki worked and reworked the shape and style of our classic striped staples, she’s developed the perfect cashmere sweaters for the cold weather months, now available at The Cashmere Shop. Just as you easily look cool and put together in the summer with a stripe tee, you now have the same ease and comfort when dressing in the colder season. Shop a little bit luxe for the holidays 🎁.

We have our Solid Cashmeres for everyday wear. There’s a classic crewneck with a collar that has double ribbing in the neckline to make it have a bit more volume and structure to it, so it’s never sloppy. Our cardigan — a style our customers love — has the same extra fill around the collar for that three-dimensional look, and features slits on the sleeves. We have a mockneck that is the perfect height for a higher-neck sweater, is a boxy shape, and features really cool slit sleeves. Then there is the v-neck, which has a slight drop shoulder, a side slit on the bottom hem’s seams (for easy front tucking), and a boxy shape in the body.

For signature stripes, there’s the popular Allegra striped cashmere, which we’ve brought back season after season, that now comes in our core colors of navy and cream and some seasonal ones.

And finally, Novelty Cashmere which includes colorful stripes in crewnecks and cardigans, special texture details like birds-eye and cable knit, cuff details, ribbing, and even sets (perfect for Christmas morning)! And of course, stripes and smiles 🙂.

Nikki’s picks include the Camel Crewneck because she loves solid’s too, not just stripes! She made the solid sweater style she sought after so we could all keep classic.

She also loves the Allegra stripe. It looks great with a black or navy coat, trench coat or grey overcoat. It’s particularly great styled with corduroy, denim and your everyday sneakers.

If you peep Nikki’s Gift Guide, she also has some favorite cashmere novelty knits. The Andre is striped crewneck, slightly thicker than the Allegra, with speckled blue, poppy, and navy. The Billy is an everyday cardigan featuring a birds-eye knit pattern for a vintage-inspired instant classic. Our bestselling Sinclair cardigan is always a hit, which will be the season’s powerhouse knit from the second you put it on. We now make it in a longer, belted version called The Vanessa, so you can swaddle yourself in cashmere this season. Pair either one with the Mabel joggers for the perfect luxurious set to wear on Christmas morning. Each would look really great wrapped in a bow under the tree.
